Emmanuel Villanueva came to the non-profit organization 100 Suits for 100 Men in Queens, and prepares to go to a job fair.
“A suit and a job, so today I’m going to that fair to look for a job with them,” says this beneficiary of said organization.
Villanueva is 17 years old and says he needs to work to help his family.
“Living with my grandmother I always helped her shopping. groceriesor helping him do laundry or detergent or sometimes from the internet,” he says.
He is one of hundreds of young people who benefit from the Empower Queens initiative that provides men’s suits and other resources.
The mission is to connect the entire community with different job opportunities.
“Queens and Kings, Royalty. I see kings and queens, I see what they don’t see,” says Kevin Livingston who founded the organization in 2011.
With the Empower Queens initiative, the organization not only delivers these suits to young people between 16 and 24 years old, but they also give them classes to be prepared before their interviews.
Eddy Tavarez, social worker at 100 Suits explains:
“We do interview practice, we give you mentoring and we help you with your resume.”
“It’s my first suit that I now own…,” adds Villanueva.
He wants to go to the University of Buffalo and study psychology.
He is the oldest of eight siblings for whom, he says, he makes most of his decisions.
“I want to be an example for my brothers so that they can see that I am looking for help, I am looking for work to continue in life.”
