When Caisa Hjelm cleaned out the children’s toys and outgrown clothes, she got the idea to create a Christmas tree inspired by Pippi Longstocking. She found an apple tree that was fairly central, yet out of the way, where she hung her clappers.

– There has been a great response. I would guess that there are close to 200 packages that have been taken down, she says.

More people got involved

Other Höganäs residents also took advantage of the idea and hung clappers in the tree.

– Closer to the Christmas weekend, there were many more who hung up clappers. I hoped for it but didn’t think it would be so much, she says.

Caisa Hjelm believes that it has been easier for people who might not dare to ask for help to go there.

– I think that people also came who might not otherwise have asked for help, so it probably helped more people.

“Feeled a clear need”

What kind of response have you received in retrospect?

– There are a lot of people who have been grateful and contacted me personally. Unfortunately, there is a lot of shame and guilt surrounding financial vulnerability.

Will you make a Christmas tree next year as well?

– If people want and thought it was a good commitment. It was clearly noticed that people were in need of it.
