A new bill is filed that seeks to penalize obscene exposure to minors

The chamber spokesperson for Proyecto Dignidad, Lisie Burgos Muñiz, reported this Wednesday that the Chamber Project 1821 was filed, which intends to add a new Article 137 to the Penal Code of Puerto Rico with the objective of penalizing obscene exposure to minors.

“The State has an urgent interest in protecting children from negative stimuli and trauma derived from obscene exposures. Our childhood is threatened by obscene displays in public places that offer family entertainment. It is crucial to expand the protection measures and close gaps to inappropriate behaviors,” Burgos Muñiz said in written statements.

The project arises in a context where the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled on several occasions that obscene content is not protected by the first amendment. In addition, in Puerto Rico there are measures that seek to protect minors from sexual content, but the new proposal aims to strengthen said protections.
