According to President Aleksandar Vucic, more than 9,400 illegally owned weapons have been handed over to the Serbian police since Monday. In addition, according to the same source, there are 400,000 pieces of ammunition and more than 880 pieces of other war equipment, including anti-tank weapons known as “Zolja”.

The police action, during which illegally owned weapons can still be handed in with no penalty up until June 8, took place after two shootings in Belgrade and Mladenovac in the previous week. 17 people were killed and another 21 injured.

Over 700,000 legally owned guns

A 13-year-old student is believed to be responsible for the killing spree in a Belgrade elementary school and a 21-year-old man for that in Mladenovac. Both used weapons their fathers owned.

Vucic also announced a drastic reduction in legally owned guns last Friday. According to official information, there are currently more than 700,000 guns in legal possession, around 300,000 of which are hunting rifles. There is no information on the number of weapons in illegal possession.
