Aitor Karanka stops being Maccabi Tel Aviv coach

No.or goes more. Aitor Karanka (Vitoria, 1973) is no longer the coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv. The coach and club have decided “by mutual agreement” to end their contractual relationship… despite having another year on their contract.

Barely six months – he arrived in January – Karanka’s adventure in Israel has lasted. The former Grenada, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough manager leaves with a balance of 12 wins, seven draws and four losses in 23 games.

“On behalf of everyone at Maccabi Tel Aviv, We want to thank Aitor and his ‘staff’ for their efforts and their contribution to the club. She has always conducted herself with professionalism and integrity. We wish Aitor all the best for the future”has declared Mitch Goldhar, owner of the club, by way of farewell. Maccabi, for now, has not made his replacement official.

Karanka arrived in Israel with his second team and was unable to prevent Maccabi Haifa, who led him by six points, from becoming champions. They finally finished third, but in the ‘playoffs’, after the regular season, only Maccabi Haifa scored more points than their namesake in Tel Aviv.

In the Cup, for his part, he reached the semifinals. He ended up falling with Beitar Jerusalem (3-1).

At the level of proper names, Karanka came across the sale of Oscar Gloukh, considered the greatest emerging talent in Israeli football, joined RB Salzburg as soon as he arrived. He tried to bet, yes, as much as possible on the youngsters: he continued Daniel Peretz as goalkeeper and put a lot of effort into working individually with Dor Turgeman, Israel’s hero in the U20 World Cup.
