In the consumer products market, the prices of the various products have soared ! After meat and eggs, it is the turn of fruits to borrow this upward trend which has exhausted the wallet of the Algerian citizen. In fact, the responsible authorities have put in place all the necessary measures to regain control over prices. In particular, by fighting against speculation on food products which has caused the scarcity of foodstuffs and the rise in prices.
And that’s not all ! Indeed, the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that with the advent of the sacred self, all consumers will be able to acquire all food products at reasonable prices, including red meat. As a reminder, the responsible authorities plan to import meat from abroad to stabilize prices during the month of Ramadan.
On their part, the citizens did not sit idly by! Indeed, several voices were raised encouraging consumers to boycott eggs. It should be noted that a tray of eggs exceeded 600 DA, or nearly 22 DA per unit! While few people responded to the call for a boycott, this operation did not take long to bear fruit. In detail, a tray of eggs has decreased by 70 DA, at wholesale market level.
Rising fruit prices: apples top the list
In fact, seasonal fruits were not spared from this significant price increase! In particular, orange and tangerine. Indeed, a kilo of oranges is displayed at more than 250 DA. Moreover, it is the same for the banana (400 DA / the kilo) and the apple (650 DA / the kilo). According to retailers, prices are likely to increase with the arrival of the month of Ramadan.
In the same vein, traders have indicated that the price increase is estimated at more than 40% compared to the previous year. They also justify this surge by the strong demand for fruit compared to supply, which remains relatively low. Indeed, the sellers have said that the fruit production for this year is not important. According to them, this is mainly due to the lack of rain.
Algerian citizens, especially the vulnerable categories, hope that the responsible authorities can curb this gigantic increase. Especially since the demand for the various products will increase before and during the month of Ramadan. This could lead to another upward wave!
