R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday for producing child pornography and kidnapping a minor, announces CNN. The fallen star is already serving a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexual crimes committed against young women, sometimes teenagers.
The singer, known worldwide for his hit I Believe I Can Fly and his 75 million records sold, was found guilty last September. He was, however, acquitted on other charges of obstruction of justice. A request for a new trial was denied.
“He refuses to take responsibility”
“Robert Kelly is a serial sexual predator who over the years has targeted young women while always taking care to hide the abuse he commits on his victims,” prosecutors said. “As of today, even after the jury’s verdict against her, Kelly refuses to take responsibility for her crimes.”
The defense asked that his two sentences take place at the same time, and not consecutively, so that the 56-year-old singer could end his days outside prison. “There is little chance that he will reoffend at the age of 80,” insisted his lawyers. “The majority of his crimes were committed half a century ago.”
