Hospital Amadora-Sintra

Almost all doctors on the team of surgeons at Hospital Fernando Fonseca, better known as Amadora-Sintra, threaten to resign if whistleblowers of alleged medical malpractice in surgeries at this unit are not removed.

The requirement appears in a petition that was delivered to the hospital administration and that was consulted by the Express.

The letter was presented to hospital management last week and discussed on Thursday, according to the newspaper.

Faced with the threat from almost all the doctors at the Amadora-Sintra surgery, “the clinical director has even asked the Medical Association for help [OE] to find an answer to the collective resignation ultimatum“, advances the Express.

But the chairman of the OM, Miguel Guimarães, refuses to be part of the issue, noting that it is a matter that the hospital administration has to resolve. For this reason, he advises those responsible for the unit to “talk to doctors in an attempt to sensitize them”as quoted by Expresso.

The undersigned was signed by the vast majority of doctors in the Department of Surgery General of Amadora-Sintra, namely by the three surgeons who are involved in the only confirmed case of bad practicesafter an expert report carried out by OM, as stated in the same newspaper.

These three doctors are being targeted by disciplinary processesas announced by the hospital administration.

A doctor from Amadora-Sintra denounced the existence of 22 cases of unnecessary surgeries and failed operations, including mutilations and even cases of deaths.

But an investigation carried out by the OM only found evidence of bad practices in a single case, rejecting the idea of “generalized bad practice”.
