At a time when electric cars are increasingly occupying the streets of our French cities, Paris is considering banning the use of a certain means of ecological transport. Spoiler: we come across them everywhere.

Getting around town: a real hassle!

On April 2, the mayor of Paris will organize a referendum to find out whether or not self-service electric scooters should disappear from the capital.. A decision, which was recently confirmed by Anne Hidalgo in an interview with Parisian. You should also know that Paris currently limits the number of operators who can provide a shared rental service.

The tender, won by Lime, Tier and Dott in 2020, ends next February. And it is therefore two months later, in April, that Parisians will have to decide on the possibility of being able to rent one of these scooters in the streets of the city. When a decision has to be made, the mayor of Paris affirms that she will respect the vote of her citizens. She also added in her interview with the Ile-de-France media: “It’s not environmentally friendly. The employees of these companies are not properly protected. »

Electric scooters: a not really ecological means of transport?

If you are Parisian, you have probably noticed the explosive arrival of electric scooters a few years ago. Today, nearly 15,000 “small two-wheelers” are available to the citizens of the city, which represents approximately 69 scooters per 10,000 inhabitants. The French capital is the most popular city in Europe for this means of transport, to realize this, you just have to trust to the figures of our colleagues from Parisianwhich explains thatbetween September 2021 and August 2022, the number of electric scooter trips increased by 90%.

Despite this, the city is far from the figures of Brussels, where there are 201 electric scooters available per 10,000 inhabitantsor even Berlin, where 48,828 “little two-wheelers” on the streets mean there are more than 100 electric scooters available for 10,000 inhabitants. However, in Paris, each “trott'” performs on average 3.5 journeys per day, compared to 1.6 or 1.3 journeys per day in Brussels or Berlin.

In addition to the problems encountered by pedestrians, Anne Hidalgo also spoke of an alleged “non-environmental” value of these services. It should be borne in mind that the more journeys avoided by cars, the more these devices are environmentally friendly. However, when we take a little interest in it, we understand that the vast majority of trips that these electric scooters take in Paris are trips that a car would not take. Added to this are the emissions due to the movement of people and companies responsible for collecting the “trott'” night and day, recharging their batteries and placing them correctly at the end of the day so that they can be used properly.
