In December 2022, the government and the Sweden Democrats announced that they had appointed an investigation into time-limited and geographically delimited visitation zones based on the Danish model, as a measure against gang crime.

– We have a very serious situation in Sweden, where we see how crime is getting worse. Now we are in a situation which, according to the police themselves, is difficult to handle. We need more tools and then this will be one, says chairman of the justice committee Richard Jomshof (SD) in Aktuellt.

“Difference between the countries”

In a search zone, the police do not need to have a concrete suspicion of a crime in order to search someone. The method has been used approximately 230 times in Denmark. And the police have, among other things, obtained illegal weapons.

– The difference is that in Sweden the police have far-reaching visitation possibilities, preventive visitation. The Swedish legislation is very far-reaching, compared to many other countries, says Ardalan Shekarabi (S) in Aktuellt.

“One of several tools”

Shekarabi believes that the government and SD focus on ineffective measures.

– It is not visitation zones that will help us. There are more policemen. It is not methods that we import from other countries with different conditions, he says.

Richard Jomshof, on the contrary, believes that visitation zones could contribute to curbing serious crime.

– I am not saying that this alone will solve any problems, but it is clear that we must work with a battery of measures, he says.

The investigation must be presented no later than January 22, 2024.
