There are a total of 137 entries from 59 publishers for the Austrian Book Prize 2023. The ten-track longlist, as well as the three tracks nominated for the debut award, will be released on September 5th. The five-track shortlist will be announced on October 10th. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on November 6 at the start of Buch Wien.

According to the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade (HVB), in the eighth year of the award’s existence, 116 titles from 55 publishers were submitted for the main award. 18 publishers with 21 debut titles applied for the debut prize. Among the 137 submitted titles from the areas of fiction, poetry, drama and essay, 35 publishers are from Austria, 23 from Germany and one from Switzerland.

The 2023 jury consists of the bookseller Verena Brunner-Loss, ORF culture editor Imogena Doderer, the culture editor Joachim Leitner (“Tiroler Tageszeitung”), the literary critic Katrin Schumacher (MDR) and the literary scholar Norbert Christian Wolf (Vienna University).

The Austrian Book Prize is awarded by the Ministry of Culture, the HVB and the Vienna Chamber of Labor and is endowed with a total of 45,000 euros. Last year, the Austrian Book Prize went to Verena Roßbacher for her novel “Mon Cheri and our demolished souls”, while Lena-Marie Biertimpel’s novel “Air Cushion” was awarded the best debut.
