Avatar: The Way of the Water has occupied first place in the French box office since its cinema release on December 14, 2022. For 7 weeks, James Cameron’s new film has left only crumbs (or almost) to the competition, but this unchallenged reign ended on February 1, 2023. Indeed, the new adventure of the most famous of the characters of the Franco-Belgian comic strip has made a sensational entry into the dark rooms. Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire even dethroned the fourth highest grossing film of all time in its home market.
In France, Avatar 2 now has no less than 13 million admissions on French soil alone, including 319,482 admissions during its eighth week of release. However, this was not enough to compete with the fifth live-action adaptation of Asterix. The film directed by Guillaume Canet collected 1,362,290 admissions in France during its first week in theaters, to which should be added the 275,000 spectators who made the trip as part of the previews. Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom therefore has 1,637,948 entries before even starting its second week of operation.
Another French blockbuster in the spring
Vincent Cassel, interpreter of “JUL” César in the last adventure of the irreducible Gauls directed by Guillaume Canet, will be on display for another blockbuster “made in France” in 2023. On April 5, 2023, the new film adaptation of the best seller written between March and July 1844 by Alexandre Dumas is released on the big screen. The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan revisits the eponymous literary myth with in the title roles François Civil (D’Artagnan), Pio Marmaï (Porthos), Romain Duris (Aramis), Eva Green (Milady de Winter) and therefore Vincent Cassel ( Athos) mentioned earlier.
