Government departments were instructed to make sure the sick and elderly could stay cool after the city of 22 million people issued a red alert, the highest level in the warning system for extreme temperatures.
The government reported Monday that Beijing had recorded 10 days of temperatures above 35 degrees C (95 F), the longest such streak since 1961.
“Relevant departments and divisions will take emergency heat stroke prevention and refreshment measures,” said a message from the municipal government, which ordered employers to “stop outdoor operations.”
At the same time, flooding has forced thousands of people to flee their homes in southern China.
The government on Wednesday issued a warning for possible flash floods in northern Inner Mongolia; Heilongjiang in the northeast, and the Tibet and Sichuan regions in the southwest.
