BVB bosses Hans-Joachim Watzke and Sebastian Kehl have left plenty of work for the second half of the season with eight expiring player contracts. However, according to “Sport Bild”, the eight players together earn around 45 million euros a year. The expiry of their contracts now offers a unique opportunity to redistribute this part of the budget.

As Kehl revealed in September, BVB player salaries should depend more on performance in the future. “It’s no use having a player with an expensive base salary who doesn’t add any sporting value,” he said at the time. As “Sport Bild” now reports, this will mean a loss of salary for many playerswith one notable exception.

BVB probably wants to reduce basic salaries, Captain Reus pushes frustration

According to this, the BVB bosses want to present midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud with an offer to extend his contract in the near future, but will not agree to a basic salary of eight million euros per year again. Instead, the 27-year-old should be offered a significantly lower salary, which can, however, increase massively through success bonuses.

The same beckons Dortmund captain Marco Reus: his basic salary of twelve million euros is also to be reduced, but with the prospect of lucrative bonuses.

However, it is questionable whether the service provider simply accepts it. Most recently, it was said that the standstill in negotiations – while Kehl is working flat out on the Moukoko extension – is perceived by the Reus side as “disrespect”. According to “Sport1”, Reus is said to have asked his advisor Dirk Lever to go looking for a club “for the first time in his career”.

BVB stretches for 18-year-olds: 40 million package for Moukoko

Apparently Youssoufa Moukoko is the exception to the salary revolution. BVB recently put together a salary package of 40 million euros (including salary, earnest money, consultant commission, etc.) for him.

Whether that’s enough for the 18-year-old remains to be seen. Although Watzke and Kehl would probably prefer to pay Moukoko a performance-related salary, the “youngest German World Cup player of all time” is in international demand. When advertising for its services, BVB cannot afford to insist on an unconventional contract model.

Big change is imminent: At least six professionals should go

As Kehl clarified in September, not all expiring contracts will be extended. According to “Sport Bild”, long-time BVB professionals Felix Passlack and Raphaël Guerreiro will definitely not get a new offer.

Anthony Modeste, who was brought in at the start of the season to replace Sébastien Haller, who is suffering from cancer, will also have to look for a new employer in the summer.

In addition, Dortmund would like to give up Nico Schulz, Emre Can and Thorgen Hazard in the summer. However, the three still have contracts until 2024, which, according to “Sport Bild”, are relatively well endowed: together they earn 20 million euros a year. Accordingly, no interested parties have come forward so far.
