Anita Aigner, assistant professor at the Technical University of Vienna, spoke on Thursday evening at “Vorarlberg LIVE” about the negative effects of the financialization of housing.
“Housing as an investment product?” is the motto of a study day that will take place this Friday at the Vorarlberg Architecture Institute (vai) in Dornbirn. In her lecture, Anita Aigner, assistant professor at the Technical University of Vienna, will talk about the negative effects of financialisation report on living space.

Housing is becoming “unaffordable”, especially for young people, says Anita Aigner on Thursday at Vorarlberg LIVE. Something has changed fundamentally since the financial crisis of 2008. “More and more people have been built, while at the same time fewer and fewer people have found reasonably affordable housing. That actually seems absurd. If more is built, it should actually be cheaper,” explains Anita Aigner.

So-called “investment apartments” would have influenced the market. “This trend towards investment-driven residential construction is one of the main reasons why purchase prices and rents have risen successively.” From April, rents are to be increased by more than eight percent. “That’s a huge amount for people who already pay a lot of rent,” criticizes Aigner. The university professor sees one possibility in decoupling the increases from the consumer price index.
In the future it will be essential to treat the existing land with care. “It should slowly seep into everyone’s mind that we can no longer afford to build on the green field.”
