Former soccer player Carlos Arregui, two-time champion in Ferro Carril Oeste under the technical direction of Carlos Timoteo Griguol, died at the age of 68, the Caballito neighborhood club reported today on its official channels.

“With deep pain, Ferro regrets to report the death of Carlos Arregui, 1982 and 1984 National Champion and eternal glory of the Club. He emerged from Ferro’s youth teams and defended our shirt in 425 games, with 48 goals scored,” the institution published.

Arregui, born in the Buenos Aires town of José C Paz and based a few years ago in Italy, played for Ferro between 1973 and 1986, a period in which he was also the protagonist of the historic participations in the Copa Libertadores in 1983 and 1985 for local titles won the previous years.

Arregui, who also lived in Bariloche and the United States, was one step away from playing in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, but was sidelined by an ingrown toenail.
