The streamer Casimiro Miguel, one of the most watched in Brazil, criticized the speech of the Minister of Sports of the Lula government, Ana Moser, that esports cannot be considered sports and called the statement “gross, grotesque and archaic”.

The content producer stated that, when justifying her position, Minister Ana Moser revealed that she was unaware of what esports are. Casimiro also said that the minister may have her opinion, but she should not ignore or minimize this market.

“Oh, I think esports is French fries.” Show! But do you recognize greatness? Do you know what you’re talking about? So beauty. It was not her case. The comment was grotesque and rude, in my opinion, because it looked like it didn’t know what it was talking about. “Ah, esport is not unpredictable”. You don’t know what you’re talking about. That comment, just that one, is already shit.

Casimiro, who was chosen Personality of the Year at the 2022 eSports Brazil Awards, also defended public investment in esports, to further promote this market, which already generates billions of reais in revenue every year.

The thing I don’t like is the simple fact that it’s an archaic comment. The way she talks. Alright, you don’t want to put esport in the sport folder, which folder are you going to put it in? Because you have to have investment, you have to have it. It’s too big, man. You can’t treat it like shit. In the Culture folder, in the Science and Technology folder, somewhere. She could only be more careful in her speech, because she disrespected a lot of people.

It is worth remembering that in the interview with UOL, in which she declared that she did not consider esports to be sports, Ana Moser compared the training of esports players to the preparation of singer Ivete Sangalo for her shows. On the stream, Casimiro mocked the comparison.

Another sentence that I remembered now that she said: “ah, Ivete Sangalo trains”. Whoa, Ana Moser. What an uncle comment, bro. In a little while she’ll say that the passista from Salgueiro trains too. What’s up? Is it over there [ministra] it’s legendary, you have to respect it, but you said b****. Everyone speaks.

The Minister of Sports in the Lula government, Ana Moser, said in an interview with the UOL portal that the portfolio will not invest resources in esports. The former volleyball athlete explained that she does not consider electronic games as a sport.

“In my view, electronic sports is an entertainment industry, it’s not a sport. So you have fun playing video games, you had fun. The esports athlete trains, but Ivete Sangalo also trains to put on a show and he’s not an athlete, she is an artist who works with entertainment”, compared the minister.

Moser also said that games cannot be compared with sports because they are predictable. “The electronic game is not unpredictable, it is designed by digital, cybernetic programming. It’s a schedule, it’s closed, different from sports”.

The portfolio holder also mentioned the period in which she worked against bills that made this equation, when she was at the head of Atletas pelo Brasil, an organization that fights for laws and public policies aimed at athletes.

“In my previous life, I took a very strong action with the legislature for the text of the general law not to be open enough to fit electronic sports. The text is there protecting the root sport. The definition of sport had been given an opening that could include electronic sports, and we closed that definition in order not to run that risk”, commented the minister.

esports regulation

It is estimated that the electronic games market moved US$ 2.3 billion in Brazil in 2021 and around 74% of brazilians play a game, according to consultancy Newzoo, but the esports sector still remains unregulated.

To try to change that, the Senator Roberto Rocha (PSDB/MA) presented Senate Bill 383/2017, which defines as sport all “activities that, making use of electronic artifacts, characterize the competition of two or more participants”.

The project came under criticism in 2019 from the gamer community, who complained that they had not been consulted and said that some parts of the law could harm the activity of professional players. In any case, the matter remains unfinished.
