Shanghai (ots/PRNewswire)

On April 18, at the 20th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai), CATL announced its plan to achieve carbon neutrality in its core business by 2025 and throughout the battery value chain by 2035.

“For CATL, achieving carbon neutrality is our responsibility, demonstrates our capability and opens up more opportunities,” said Jiang Li, CATL’s executive secretary, at the event launching the company’s carbon neutral strategy, held on the first day of Auto Shanghai The sales volume of CATL’s lithium-ion battery increased to 289GWh in 2022, and according to SNE Research, CATL held 37% and 43.4% respectively of the global market share in the global supply of EV battery and energy storage battery. Therefore, the CATL carbon neutrality plan the most comprehensive in the lithium-ion battery industry.

To achieve the zero-carbon goals, CATL will implement CO2 reduction in five key areas, namely mining, bulk raw materials, battery materials, battery manufacturing and battery systems, with the support of its four innovation systems. Meanwhile, CATL is heavily promoting the CREDIT program in its supply chain. CREDIT is a CATL-initiated sustainable value chain transparency audit program that includes a Sustainable Development Management Mechanism, a Code of Business Ethics, Environmental Protection, Labor Practices and Responsible Sourcing. CATL hopes to use this program to raise awareness of its supply chain partners on sustainable development and support them in exploring sustainable development potential.

At this year’s Auto Shanghai, CATL also demonstrated the detailed information of the battery passport, which is a digital twin of the physical battery and includes information such as battery, raw material, ESG and supply chain data. The battery pass is a pilot program created by the Global Battery Alliance. In the future, consumers will be able to view the various information of a battery by scanning the QR code on the battery passport, thus obtaining the necessary data for choosing low-carbon and responsible batteries. As a member of the new Board of Directors of the Global Battery Alliance, CATL will be actively involved in formulating and improving regulations related to the battery passport to contribute to industry supply chain transparency, battery life cycle traceability management and battery recycling.

In recent years, CATL has worked tirelessly to continue green development. In 2019, it took the lead in tracking commodities using blockchain technology in the industry. The Yibin factory became the industry’s first carbon neutral battery factory in 2021 and obtained the carbon neutrality certificate in 2022. CATL has advanced more than 400 energy saving projects by 2022, avoiding a total of 450,000 tons of carbon emissions and increasing the proportion of green electricity use to 26.60%. Through a series of technological innovations and experience accumulation, CATL has not only built a leading competitive position in terms of carbon neutrality at home and abroad, but also brought vitality to the high-quality development of the industry.
