Elon Musk recently initiated an open letter together with leading figures from the IT industry and science. It states that competitive AI entails great risks for society.
The signatories, which include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, believe a six-month hiatus for AI experimentation is necessary. Musk himself was a co-founder of OpenAI, but stepped down as chairman in 2018. It has now become known that Musk had registered an AI development company called “X.AI” in the US state of Nevada – weeks before the publication of the open letter.

He explained to the controversial moderator Tucker Carlson that he wanted to create a “third option” alongside Microsoft and Google. Musk left open exactly what these plans look like. He envisions an “artificial intelligence that seeks maximum truth and tries to understand the nature of the universe,” he explained to Carlson. During the interview, Musk also advocated government regulation of the technology. “It’s not fun to be regulated,” Musk said. However, he thinks it is necessary to regulate the development of AI before a catastrophe occurs.
Criticism of OpenAI and ChatGPT
The name is already known. The AI developed by Musk’s new company is said to be called “TruthGPT” and, according to the founder’s rules, should be an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The name is reminiscent of “Truth Social”, a platform that the then US President Donald Trump founded in response to his blocked Twitter account. “Truth” is the English word for truth.
In the interview, Musk accused OpenAI of wanting to train artificial intelligence “politically correct”. Musk, on the other hand, wants to “understand the nature of the universe” using AI. The billionaire has been warning of the potential dangers of artificial intelligence for years. According to Musk, it could destroy civilization. He did not give any specific reasons for this.
