Tied up or in the ice-cold kennel without heat protection – VGT files a complaint against three dog owners
They are images of times believed to be in the past: a dog on a chain, one on a short rope without moving and a dog without protection from the weather behind bars every night. Obvious violations of the law, which, according to reporting persons, have been going on for a long time.
The VGT will report a total of 3 dog owners from Dornbirn, Lustenau and Lauterach for violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the 2nd Animal Husbandry Ordinance.
Sandy P Peng, animal rights activist at the VGT: These dogs are in need of love, they urgently need social contact and human warmth. Instead, some have to endure the night at sub-zero temperatures without protection against the cold. Water frozen in the bowls.
Three cases, three fates
Sandy P. Peng explains: These pets are kept as guard dogs. They live in different situations, none are animal friendly and all are illegal. One hangs on a chain, is totally trusting and in need of love at the same time. The tethering of dogs is clearly prohibited in Austria.
Dog in cattle shed
Another dog lives with a lonely cattle shed, he is allowed to be outdoors during the day, but social contact seems to be very limited. And he has to spend the night in the freezing cold in an open shed. There is no sheltered hut, as required by law, only a small blanket should serve as a base.
Chained to old car
Another dog has had a particularly hard fate. During the day he is attached to the towing device of an old car with a short rope, the open trunk of which is his only retreat. He has to spend the night behind a padlock in a small shed, so there’s nowhere to go. This is clearly against the law as well. Action is urgently needed here! It surprises us that in the eyes of the public these illegal conditions have evidently existed for a long time.
Strict regulations in Austria
The VGT would like to thank attentive animal lovers for the numerous reports that indicate animal suffering.
Keeping dogs on chains or ropes is strictly forbidden in Austria! There are strict regulations for keeping dogs in kennels. In principle, the place for dogs is with humans, ie they must be able to spend the night in human living quarters from the point of view of animal protection.
The VGT is preparing charges against all 3 owners.
