Sandra Schoch, Deputy Mayor of Bregenz, comments on the VOL.AT reporting on the length of the green phases of some pedestrian traffic lights in Bregenz.

In a report from February 13, 2023, VOL.AT took a closer look at the pedestrian crossing in front of the Hypo in Bregenz and asked people in Vorarlberg what they thought of the length of the said green phase. Many criticized this and stated that it could definitely be longer. Edeltraud from Bregenz explained in the VOL.AT interview that politicians should start to assume older people: “If someone is 80 years old, then they no longer jump over the zebra crossing.”

Double throw for pedestrians

The deputy mayor of Bregenz, Sandra Schoch, would like to make a few technical additions to the topic: “At the Hypo crosswalk there has been a double throw since 2014, which specifically supports pedestrians,” explains Schoch. This shortens the waiting time for pedestrians, they get another green phase within a short time.

“Chain reaction across half the country”

They also wanted to install that double start at the transition to the station, but the state road construction office had postponed this again and again. “Resetting a traffic light is not that easy, as it means a chain reaction across half the country,” says Schoch.

“Crossing can be finished well”

A double throw is a classic measure to support pedestrian traffic, because even if the traffic light turns red, there is a so-called “clearance phase” before the traffic light switches to green. “That means the crossing can be completed well,” explains Schoch. However, many pedestrians do not know this and feel uncomfortable when the traffic light turns red before the end of the route.
