A fire broke out on an industrial site on the Sophienwerder peninsula in Berlin-Spandau on Sunday afternoon. This was confirmed by a spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade.

A yard containing 300 cubic meters of wood waste and bulky waste caught fire, causing a large cloud of smoke. The extinguishing work will continue for a long time. “There are many embers,” said a spokesman for the fire department. The material is pulled apart with wheel loaders and gradually deleted. 45 emergency services are on site.

“The smoke is currently rising because of the favorable weather,” the spokesman said. “If the wind picks up, we’ll have to reassess the potential health impact.”

The cause of the fire is not yet clear and is still being determined. The affected area belongs to a private waste disposal company. (tsp)
