Company that owns the submersible Titan announces that it suspends all its operations

OceanGate, an Everett, Washington-based company, owned the submersible Titan, which imploded as it descended June 18 toward the Titanic wreckage in the North Atlantic.

The implosion killed all five people on board, including the submersible’s pilot and company CEO Stockton Rush.

The company’s website said on Thursday that it “has suspended all exploration and commercial operations.”

The Coast Guard is investigating the implosion.

OceanGate is headquartered in the United States. OceanGate Expeditions, a subsidiary, is registered in the Bahamas. The Titan submersible “was not a US flag vessel and was never verified or certified by the US Coast Guard,” it said.

Also killed in the implosion were two members of a prominent Pakistani family — Shahzada Dawood and her son Suleman Dawood — British adventurer Hamish Harding and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet. They each paid $250,000 to participate in the expedition.
