Torres Martínez, 41, escaped from Cuba and embarked on a new journey in Israel, initially working as a housekeeper, but with the support of her employer, she was able to practice medicine again.

According to what he said in a chronicle about the Cuban woman, the agency YnetNews She said that the doctor planned her trip to Israel at the age of 25 without her parents.

At 22, she had met a man older than her with whom she established relationships and their connection lasted a long time, something that led her to think of Israel as a possible option to settle.

“I realized that I had no future in Cuba. My aspirations as a doctor seemed unattainable there. At the age of 25, without my parents’ knowledge, I organized my escape to Israel. Deep down, I knew that if I had trusted them, They would not have allowed me to leave everything behind and embark on this journey,” he told the outlet.

After a perilous four-day voyage at sea, he finally reached the shores of the United States and later settled in Israel.

“I had to make a precarious deal with smugglers who were waiting for me and a small group of people under the cover of night. (…) my reality became a harrowing journey that lasted four agonizing days across the sea, without food. All this time, I battled a deep-seated fear, knowing full well that I lacked the most basic swimming skills,” he said.

In Israel, Torres Martínez converted to Judaism and decided to start a family.

After undergoing medical treatments, she was able to have children, but her husband’s illness led her to have to take on new challenges and work tirelessly.

Currently, the Cuban is a famous specialist in family and pediatric medicine.

He runs the Lev Shoham General Clinic near his home in Beit Arif, where he assists the local community.

“I chose medicine because I wanted to help others and provide all the healing I could,” he told reporters.

The doctor has never returned to Cuba. Her parents can go and return, but for her that path is closed, according to her.
