He pinches his arm every morning, he says.

– That youth confederate who joined the center party in the early 2000s didn’t join because he thought he would become party leader. I joined because I was curious and wanted to be involved and make an impact. And all of a sudden you get the question. So it’s a scam.

“Being extremely moved”

Thursday is the time. Then Muharrem Demirok, who has long been a municipal councilor in Linköping, can be elected as the new party leader for the Center Party.

He has received a lot of cheers during his tour as party leader candidate, he says.

– People I don’t know got in touch: “You are absolutely the right person to take the center party to the next level”. It’s support from people I haven’t met in person. You become incredibly moved and a little embarrassed.

“There is a way back”

But Muharrem Demirok has also had to receive strong criticism and even hatred, among other things in connection with the attention that he was convicted of assault when he was 17 and 22 years old.

Could you have imagined it would be this big?

– Both. It is clear that it is different with a party leader candidate who may have a youth that most other party leaders do not have. I hope that it can be a story for young people who feel they have done wrong. That there is a way back. You are not condemned to be who you were, but you can pull yourself together, lift yourself out of a vulnerable suburb and actually stand there and be a party leader candidate.

In the video, Muharrem Demirok talks about the hate, what gets under his skin, and what makes it worth it anyway.

17 years ago, Muharrem Demirok led a role play with high school students in Motala. At the time, he was young and a novice politician. Now he pinches his arm at the thought that he might become party leader, he says. Photo: SVT’s archive
