Details of canceled Rockstar spy game emerge

Former technical director of Rockstar Games, Obbe Vermeijrecently shared new details of Agenta spy game announced in E3 2009, which ended up being cancelled.

According to Avoidthe stadium plan was to divide the Rockstar North into two teams, one that would work on GTA IV, and the other on Agentwhich was called by the code name Jimmy. The name was a clear reference to the spy game’s main influence: James Bond (Jimmy is a common nickname for James).

On his personal blog, Avoid shared some more details about the game’s development:

(Agent) would be set in the 70s, it would be more linear than GTA with several locations. There was a French Mediterranean city, a ski resort, Cairo and at the end there would be a big shootout with lasers in space.

The former employee of Rockstar then explains that, eventually, the company decided to focus all its efforts on franchising GTA.

The game was not progressing as well as we had hoped. It was inevitable that eventually the entire company would support GTA4he said. We tried to shorten the game in an attempt to get most of it done before the inevitable call (from Rockstar New York) arrived. We cut out an entire level (I think Cairo) and maybe even the space section.

It was clear that Jimmy would be a distraction for us and we dropped it. I think it was handed off to another Rockstar company, but it was never finished.

The development of the spy game lasted a year, but the Rockstar interrupted and never reactivated, when he needed his entire team working in GTA 4.

Currently, the Rockstar is working on the highly anticipated GTA 6.
