In the first round, the two top teams played a mixed game characterized by many duels, bad passes and stick errors. After some dribbling, Serge Gnabry hit the post with a deflected shot (8′) before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave Bayern the lead after a wide-ranging transition (38′).
RB had planned more for the second round and was quickly rewarded by Halstenberg’s equalization (52nd). The Bavarians found no answer, acted unusually nervous and lifeless. In addition, Munich were lucky that Dayot Upamecano only saw a yellow card for his foul as the last man against Dominik Szoboszlai (66th).
The bottom line is a performance-based draw in a fast-paced but technically weak game. Bayern maintain their six-point lead over third-placed Leipzig in the table. SC Freiburg can gain two points with a win at VfL Wolfsburg (3:30 p.m.).
In focus
Yann Sommer only trained with Bayern for the first time on Thursday, and a day later he was already in Bayern’s Bundesliga goal. In Leipzig, the Swiss experienced an uneventful first half. He easily held Emil Forsberg’s long-range shot (22′), showed his usual confidence in the build-up game and refrained from overly ambitious actions.
Like the entire Bayern team, Sommer was challenged a little more in the second half, but showed himself safe with Olmo’s deflected shot (54′) and an intercepted corner (48′). When he conceded, he was powerless. The Swiss interjected minor uncertainties with his foot late in the game – but all in all he delivered a flawless premiere.
scoring
0-1 Choupo Moting (38′) Sané opens a counterattack with a flat diagonal pass to the left. Gnabry drives the leather into the penalty area and crosses to the far post with his weak left foot, where Choupo-Moting runs in and carries the leather over the line from close range.
1-1 Halstenberg (52′): Kimmich plays a daring chipball into the center of his own half of the field. RB conquers the leather and switches quickly. Silva prevails against Kimmich with a slight triot pull, brings the ball into the middle and finds Szoboszlai. Whose header tumbles to Halstenberg, who sinks.
