After the collapse of two residential buildings in Marseille, southern France, eight people are still missing under the rubble. According to the authorities, an explosion had occurred in one of the buildings this morning. The reason for this is so far unclear.

The residential building collapsed, as did a neighboring building, and a third building was also affected. A fire also broke out, making rescue work difficult. Rescue workers used specially trained dogs to find people who had been buried.

Five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said during a visit to the scene of the accident that 30 buildings in the area had been evacuated.
