George Hayward, a former Facebook employee, has filed a complaint against the social media giant. He accuses Facebook of secretly drain the battery of its users’ smartphones in order to carry out what are called “negative tests” internally. His refusal to participate in these negative tests would therefore have earned him his dismissal from the company last November.

According to the former employee, Facebook voluntarily conducts tests which consist of emptying the battery of smartphones in order to test new features or try to fix other issues existing. George Hayward mentioned in particular problems with the execution speed of the mobile application and the speed of loading images.

33-year-old George Hayward said in Manhattan Federal Court that he refused to participate in these tests at Facebook. ” I told my manager that it can harm someone “, he specified. In particular, he referred emergency situations where the victims cannot contact the emergency services. When he was still employed at Facebook, George Hayward worked on the Messenger instant messaging application which has a dark mode. Users of Messenger are also affected by these negative tests carried out by Facebook which are responsible for draining their battery. Yet, as the lawsuit filed against Facebook states, this poses a real danger to users. They could for example running out of battery due to facebook at a time when they need to contact someone urgently.

George Hayward clarified that he doesn’t know how many users are impacted by Facebook’s negative tests. He knows, however, that these tests are indeed carried out. Indeed, he had received an internal document entitled ” How to Run Reflective Negative Tests “. According to him, it was the most horrible document of his career. Meta, which will restore Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, has not yet officially communicated on this case.
