Streaming services, a Ponzi scheme?

James Cameron loves the movie theater and its experience. The proof with Avatar 2 which has been entirely thought out to be experienced on the big screen. Suffice to say that the visually ambitious blockbuster director takes a very dim view of streaming platforms.

During the podcast Kim Master’s The BusinessJames Cameron gave his opinion on netflixDisney+ or even HBO Max… without taking gloves.

I feel like this virus infected the world at the same time as the pandemic [de COVID]. Today, we are bringing cinema back to life, but [le streaming] killed the dark rooms for almost a year. The leaders of streaming platforms told fairy tales to Wall Street guyshow they were going to create content.

From what I have seen from afar as I have not been personally involved, it seems that everyone threw money out the windows to create content and constantly renew their catalog. But it looks like now people have to subscribe to 8 or 10 subscriptions [HBO, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+…] to see it all.

It is obvious that this situation cannot last and, a priori, it is a Ponzi scheme. I think there will be some regulation thereafter.

James Cameron doesn’t go with the back of the spoon when he calls streaming services a well-known Ponzi scheme. One thing is certain, since the déconfinement, the popularity of these platforms is declining. Netflix recently increased its prices and now prohibits account sharing.
