After a serious traffic accident last summer in which a 50-year-old cyclist died at the New Palace, the allegedly responsible driver now has to go to court. A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office in Potsdam confirmed to the PNN on Monday that charges of negligent homicide had now been brought before the district court. A date for the hearing has not yet been set, it said.

The case caused concern at the time. According to police information at the time, on July 25, 2022, a woman between the ages of 35 and 45 was driving her car on Am Neuen Palais and suddenly left the road. She collided with the oncoming cyclist, who died on the spot.

The police later confirmed to the “Märkische Allgemeine” that the woman had a baby with her in the car, which was also injured. Investigators have not released any details about the exact cause of the accident. In the past, convictions for negligent manslaughter in the course of traffic accidents were usually sentenced to suspended sentences.

A so-called ghost bike still commemorates the accident today. At the time, the General German Bicycle Club had this set up at a vigil – combined with the demand that the cycle path infrastructure in Potsdam had to be made safer.
