French writer Philippe Sollers is dead. He died at the age of 86, his publisher announced today. Several French media had previously reported.

As the author of more than 80 works, critic and editor, he shaped literary France for decades. Sollers became famous in 1983 with his novel Women.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne wrote on Twitter of his death: “His tireless work on form, his search for beauty will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.”
