In the United States, Every First Sunday in August is Memorial Day. Friendshipin commemoration of the importance of the bond of friendship as a noble and valuable feeling in the lives of human beings.
The idea of Friendship Day was presented in the US in 1919, adding to other days such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, among other days that are part of the American calendar.
In 1922 the Greeting Card Association made this day general, further ingraining it in society. A decade later, JC Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, makes it one of Hallmark’s first holidays, establishing National Friendship Day in the US.
Congressional Ratification
But it was in 1935, when the US Congress continued with the celebration and ratified the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day, reports an article in days of the year
In the United States and parts of Asia, this day is celebrated with the delivery of greetings and presents among friends, and similar celebrations were held in different countries of South America and Europe, on different dates.
This is a celebration that also extends to American schools, where the little ones tend to decorate cards that they later give to their parents or classmates, in addition to distributing sweets.
In other Latin American countries it is celebrated on different dates. In Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay the most widespread proposal is that of the day man landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.
This is preceded by the World Friendship Crusade that had been established in Paraguay in 1958, and is celebrated every July 30 under the name of Friendship Day.
United Nations Resolution
On April 27, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly finally resolved to invite all member countries to celebrate International Friendship Day on July 30 of each year, following the original proposal promoted by the World Friendship Crusade. . The initiative was presented jointly by 43 countries, including Spain and almost all the countries of South America.
