After-school care fees are also to be dropped in Berlin for third-grade children. The Senate has agreed to this. The new regulation is to come into force on August 1, said Senate spokeswoman Lisa Frerichs on Tuesday after the Senate meeting. So far, after-school care in Berlin has only been free of charge for students in the first two classes.

With the new step, many Berlin families would be relieved, said Frerichs. According to estimates by the education administration, around 35,000 schoolchildren benefited from this. In the 2022/23 budget, the necessary funds are already earmarked for the next school year. This will implement an important project of the red-green-red state government.

A corresponding template on the subject is now going to the council of mayors from the districts. In order for after-school care in third grade to become free of charge, the school law and the regulation on student support and care must be amended, among other things. (dpa)
