During the parliamentary session on Tuesday, the Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion Christophe Béchu gave an update on the system.

The fuel allowance has not yet fully met its audience. This device has been in place since the beginning of the year to succeed the government rebate, the price of which had gone from 18 to 30 cents per liter of fuel at the start of the school year to end the year 2022 at 10 cents. While these fuel discounts were aimed at all motorists, the government now wants to target the most modest among them who need their car to go to work through the payment of a check for 100 euros.

Designed according to income criteria, the fuel allowance is supposed to benefit 10 million motorists who can apply for it since January 16 and until February 28. But according to the Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion during the day’s session in the National Assembly in the midst of a parliamentary debate on pension reform, there are still too many of them who have not formulated their request in line while the first payments have been in place for ten days.

“More than one in two French people who can benefit from this check have not yet made this request and this is a strong measure in favor of large riders and the most modest families”, indicated Christophe Béchu.

The diesel goes under the gasoline

It is, however, a valuable aid at a time when inflation remains at a high level at the start of the year and when fuel prices are once again heading towards the symbolic threshold of 2 euros per liter after the end of the rebates. Over the past week, diesel prices have fallen below those of gasoline for the first time since June 10th. The super SP95-E10 thus shows an average price of 1.8996 euro per litre, down weekly by 1.1 centimes per litre, while diesel peaks at 1.8873 euro per liter after a more significant decrease of 5.6 centimes per liter in a week.

The trend increase in fuel prices towards the 2 euro per liter mark is therefore slowing down, but this should indeed be exceeded in the coming weeks. Indeed, the recent introduction of the European embargo on Russian petroleum products should eventually push up prices, particularly of diesel.
