Hamburg.
The plaza of the Elbphilharmonie is a popular vantage point for residents of Hamburg and tourists. So far, the visit was free. Will it stay like this?

Visiting the plaza of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie remains free of charge. “This is a big gesture to all visitors,” said Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda (SPD) on Tuesday in Hamburg.

For this, the operating company of Elbe Philharmonic Hall receive financial support for building management for the current double-budget period. “We are also in talks about how we can ensure permanent free access to the plaza,” said the senator.

Admission was discussed

A possible entry for the plaza has been discussed for months in order to ensure cost-effective operation. The idea of only granting Hamburg residents free access could not have been implemented for legal reasons, said Brosda. Around 80 percent of the Plaza visitors came from outside. Spontaneous visits to the Plaza have been free since it opened in November 2016. Two euros are only charged for booking a visit.

Above all, the left in the Hamburg Parliament had insisted that access to the plaza remain free. “For us it is clear: the largest balcony in the city was built with a lot of public money – access must therefore remain free permanently,” said Norbert Hackbusch, spokesman for cultural policy for the left.
