In a week, on Friday 05.05.2023, the acclaimed Harry Potter role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy is finally coming to the so-called last-gen consoles. Owners of Playstation 4 and Xbox One can then also experience the magical adventures in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice’s Wizarding World. However, Nintendo fans will have to wait a little longer. Hogwarts Legacy for the Switch will be released on Tuesday 07/20/2023. In addition to all the hype surrounding the video game, there is also great excitement about the planned Harry Potter TV series. But calls for a boycott are increasing again.

New Harry Potter TV series calls for boycott of JK Rowling

The British best-selling author has attracted attention during the pandemic for making transphobic comments on Twitter and sharing highly questionable tweets and accounts. In the run-up to the release of Hogwarts Legacy, there were numerous calls to boycott the role-playing game. Eventually, JK Rowling would benefit financially from the game sales.

However, this did not detract from the success of the first Harry Potter RPGs. On the contrary: Hogwarts Legacy sold well above the publisher’s expectations. Since then the Wizarding World on everyone’s lips again and felt more popular than ever.

When a reboot of Harry Potter was finally announced in the form of a TV series on the streaming platform Max (formerly HBO max) in the last few days, the enthusiasm among fans of the sorcerer’s apprentice knew no bounds. Immediately, however, boycott calls were made again. JK Rowling responded to this again on Twitter.

New Harry Potter TV series: JK Rowling scoffs at boycott calls

In a tweet, the controversial writer said: “I have terrible news to share. Activists in the comments are trying to spread another Boycott against my work to organize, this time against the Harry Potter TV series”. She continues sarcastically: “I am hereby forewarned and to be on the safe side, I’ve built up a large stock of champagne.”

JK Rowling has already caused a stir in the past with mockery of her critics. Stars of the Harry Potter films such as Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe or Rupert Grint then distanced themselves from the author. Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) and Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), on the other hand, clearly sided with JK Rowling.

The defenders of the writer are now also joined Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn). The 73-year-old British actor secured JK Rowling in an interview his solidarity and full support. It is not yet clear when the Harry Potter series will be released. As with Hogwarts Legacy, controversy is expected to rise again as more details about the reboot emerge.
