Honduras registers the entry of almost 80,000 Cubans so far this year

TEGUCIGALPA.- The migration crisis in Honduras reached unprecedented proportions so far this year, with the arrival of almost 80,000 Cuban migrants who have entered the country in search of a step towards the USAaccording to recent data from the National Migration Institute of Honduras (INMH).

This phenomenon, according to Cuban Diaryis part of the continuity of a trend that began in November 2021, when the Daniel Ortega regime in Nicaragua eliminated the visa requirement for Cuban citizens, triggering an unprecedented wave of migration.

The magnitude of the crisis has led Honduran authorities to face significant challenges in managing the needs of migrants, setting up four Centers for Attention to Irregular Migrants (CAMI), where assistance is provided, biometric data is taken and medical attention.

Honduran immigration policy

In the midst of this journey, the United Nations resident coordinator in Honduras, Alice Shackelford, urged the country’s authorities to urgently review its immigration policy and approve a new Migration Law. Furthermore, she emphasized the need to establish an inter-institutional commission that comprehensively addresses the complex situation of migrants and guarantees a coordinated response.

The migration crisis is not without risks, as evidenced by the incidents that occurred in October 2022, when three Cuban migrants, including a minor, were injured in a road accident in Honduras. These types of events highlight the dangers that migrants face during their journey through the country.

As Honduras becomes a crucial point on the migratory route for Cubans to the United States, the crisis highlights the urgent need for coordinated regional action to address humanitarian challenges and ensure respect for the fundamental rights of those seeking a better future.
