Hurricane Hilary leaves one dead in Mexico: the tropical storm is now moving towards the US

In the early hours of this Sunday, the National Hurricane Center (NCH) reported that Hurricane Hilary will bring possible “catastrophic and potentially deadly flooding” to both Baja California and the southern United States.

Flash flood advisories remain in effect for Southern California.

“Preparations for flood impacts associated with Hilary should be completed as soon as possible as heavy rains are about to begin,” the National Weather Service reported.

Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin this Sunday in southern California, with gusts of strong winds and continuous rain in various sectors of San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino counties, among others.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a state of emergency declaration for much of the southern part of the state in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary.

In addition, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a local emergency declaration for potential power outages, downed trees and power lines, flooding, and other damage. Bass ordered that “Emergency Operations Organization (EOO) be activated immediately to take whatever steps are necessary for the protection of life and property.”

For its part, San Bernardino County announced an evacuation order for parts of the region that are expected to be heavily impacted by rain and wind. Affected residents include those in:

  • Forest Falls
  • Mountain Home Village
  • Angelus Oaks
  • Northeast Yucaipa
