On Monday morning, an ice-covered car met TV 2’s news anchor Rune Kjos when he was leaving for work.

– There was a two centimeter thick layer of glaze on top of the car, Kjos tells his own employer.

He describes it as a transparent, stone-hard layer of ice that lay like a blanket over the entire car.

Kjos has been commuting to and from Drammen for 20 years. Usually the journey takes 35 minutes.

Today he took over two hours to work.

– The whole courtyard was like an ice rink after all the rain had frozen. I had to nail open one of the doors with an ice scraper. I put the heater on and put a fan inside the car to melt the ice.

– Everyone was in the right field

On Monday morning, the Swedish Road Administration warned of very demanding driving conditions in large parts of the country.

– I have been commuting between Drammen and Oslo for 20 years, the driving conditions have never been worse than this morning here. I have never experienced anything like it, says Kjos.

He says that when he finally got rid of all the ice and litter so he could get away, the driving conditions on the motorway were not much better.

– I got out on the E18 and fortunately there was not a lot of traffic. All the cars were in the right lane because no one dared to drive past each other. If it had been a weekday, there would probably have been more accidents.

Reported from the road

– I called in and said I was delayed because of the weather. We then agreed that it was wise to give a report on the road.

He stopped at Slependen in Bærum and told a little about the conditions on the road.

Kjos explains that all the cars drove at a maximum of 50 km/h on the E18 from Drammen to Oslo.

– The fact that there were not so many cars out today, as it is Boxing Day, saved the whole day. If it had been a weekday, I would have probably spent even longer, says Kjos.

On Monday morning, the Swedish Road Traffic Center reports very demanding driving conditions over large parts of the country.

Warning

The Swedish Road Administration has a clear message for those going out to drive today.

– If you have to go out today, calculate plenty of time, keep your distance, slow down and drive according to the conditions. It can be very slippery in some places, says traffic operator Christofa Kei Nilsen.

A lot of water and ice in the roadway causes trouble in several places.

– Water in the road makes it extra slippery. It has been challenging with this rain all night, says Kei Nilsen.

She says that the Swedish Road Administration is working like crazy, but the problem is that what you put on the road is washed away.

– Today is a day when you have to consider whether you really have to go out with the car or not.
