British scientists have reported the calving of a huge iceberg near a UK research station in Antarctica. With an area of 1,550 square kilometers, the block that broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf is larger than the city of São Paulo.
According to an announcement made this Monday (23) by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the formation of the new iceberg is, this time, a natural process that is not related to climate change. This phenomenon is known as calving.
The iceberg broke off nearly a decade after the discovery of a huge crevasse in the Brunt Shelf. Last year, another huge block of ice, this time measuring 1,270 km², had already appeared in the region.
The British mobile research base located on the platform was even moved between 2016 and 2017, so as not to be adrift in the event of a disruption. It is still not known what the trajectory of this new iceberg may be.
