He Los Angeles City Council appointed this Wednesday Imelda Padilla as a temporary voting member while the final results of the election are certified.

Padilla leads by more than 1,700 votes in the special election to represent District Six.

The presidential hopeful was sworn in along with her family, saying the district is “ready to have a voting member” and “for someone to stand up for her name.”

Imelda Padilla is one of the candidates to become the new councilor of the 6th district of Los Angeles, to occupy the seat that was left empty. After the turbulent departure of Nury Martinez.

“Of course, I also want to say a special thank you to my family for all they have done for me over the years,” Padilla said.

The council voted 10-0 to name Padilla, as indicated by a motion filed last week by council president Paul Krekorian. Council members Heather Hutt, Tim McOsker, Katy Yaroslavsky and Curren Price were absent during the vote.

“The fact that Ms. Padilla will not be sworn in as a District 6 council member until at least August 1 could hinder her ability to fully prepare for her position during the summer recess and could (impair) her ability to help to their constituents during that period”, highlights the motion that was read during the meeting.

Councilwoman Eunisses Hernández thanked her colleagues for presenting the motion. Hernández, who has known Padilla for many years, called her one of the “hardest-working people” he knows of her.

“I am incredibly proud of you and really excited for you to join this space to see how we move in a better direction for all of our districts across the city,” Hernandez said.

Councilwoman Mónica Rodríguez, who represents District Seven, which borders District Six, said that Padilla represents everything that “our communities” are.

The special election to choose who will take the chair of the councilman that Nury Martínez left will be next April 4. Enrique Chiabra spoke with the candidate Marisa Alcaraz.

“It is an incredible honor to welcome them back to finally have another partner in the fight for the Northeast San Fernando Valley,” Rodríguez said.

Padilla, 35, a community relations manager, declared victory in the campaign to serve out the remainder of former council president Nury Martinez’s term, which ends in December 2024.

Padilla’s opponent, board adviser Marisa Alcaraz, conceded defeat on Friday.

Hours before the announcement of Martinez’s resignation from the Los Angeles Council for the 6th district, people were calling for his resignation.

In the latest electoral results, Padilla leads with 8,520 votes compared to Alcaraz’s 6,751, a margin of 55.79% to 44.21%. Voter turnout based on semi-official results was 13.02%, according to the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office.

The county recorder’s office will certify and declare the winner of the election on Friday.

Padilla is scheduled to officially take office after the council returns from its three-week summer recess July 7-28.

Martinez resigned in October after she was caught making racist remarks at a meeting that was secretly recorded and posted online.

District Six encompasses Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and the eastern parts of the North Hills and North Hollywood.
