Elon Musk, although it seems impossible, has launched more companies and initiatives in addition to PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX or now running Twitter. In his company history there is also OpenAI, the research center on Artificial Intelligence that he promoted and co-founded in 2016.
Today OpenAI is known worldwide for being behind ChatGPT or Dall-E and also for having been invested with huge sums of money by Microsoft, giant that is now taking advantage of this link to introduce OpenAI products in its Bing search engine.
However, Musk, long detached from OpenAI, does not agree with the path he has taken in recent times.
Musk is growing increasingly irritated with the latest crop of AI chatbots, which are wreaking absolute havoc on the web and wow in equal measure.
OpenAI’s profit motive, Musk’s main disagreement
As we say, that makes sense given his own personal history with OpenAI, the organization he co-founded about eight years ago. In 2018, Musk left the group’s board amid disagreements over his direction. The following year, the company transitioned from a nonprofit to a private for-profit entity, a decision that clearly infuriated Musk.
“OpenAI was created as an open source company (hence I called it ‘Open’ AI), not for profit, to serve as a counterweight to Google,” Musk tweeted today, “but has now become a closed source company and maximum profit effectively controlled by Microsoft.”
Elon Musk mistrusts the future of some companies.
Microsoft announced last month that it would invest $10 billion in OpenAI, which went on to develop Microsoft’s successful AI chatbot ChatGPT and erratic AI Bing.
In recent days Musk has first reiterated that he believes that AI is “one of the biggest risks to the future of civilization”, a message that he has been launching since long before leaving OpenAI.
On Thursday, Musk compared Microsoft’s chatbot to “the AI from the System Shock video game going berserk and killing everyone,” a reference to a popular 1994 first-person video game.
