The former head of the Italian government was released on Sunday from the intensive care unit in which he had been since April 5, but he remains hospitalized, according to local media.

Former Italian head of government and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, 86, in intensive care at the prestigious San Raffaele hospital in Milan due to a lung infection and chronic leukaemia, “has been transferred to a care unit normal,” writes Corriere della Sera citing sources close to his family circle.

Nicknamed “the immortal” for his longevity in politics and re-elected to the Senate in 2022, the octogenarian has a lung infection linked to “chronic myelomonocytic leukemia which he has suffered for some time”, according to his doctors.

Multiple hospital stays

Silvio Berlusconi, one of the richest men on the peninsula with a fortune valued by Forbes at 6.4 billion euros, has increased hospital stays in recent years. Last month, he had already spent four days in the same hospital.

Silvio Berlusconi, who entered politics in 1994, was Prime Minister for a total of nine years. Despite a series of sex scandals and court cases that have tarnished his image, he has retained a special place in the hearts of many Italians.
