The Argentine technical director Jorge Sampaoli, recently separated from Sevilla of Spain, agreed on Friday his arrival at Flamengo of Brazil, current champion of the Copa Libertadores.

The Rio de Janeiro giant communicated the arrival of the native of the province of Santa Fe on its official channels: “The Flamengo Regatta Club announces that it has reached an agreement with the coach Jorge Sampaoli to lead the professional soccer team until December 31, 2024”.

The former coach of the Argentine national team in the 2018 World Cup in Russia will replace the Portuguese Vitor Pereira, who had taken office in January, but lasted only a few months after losing five important games for different tournaments.

The result that sentenced his departure was the 4-1 win that Fluminense, his greatest rival, gave him in the second leg final of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, last Sunday.

Sampaoli, 63, comes from a second cycle without good results in Seville, which he commanded in 31 games between October 2022 and March of this year.

Flamengo will be his third Brazilian club after managing Santos (2018-2019) and Atlético Mineiro (2020-2021). At the Rio de Janeiro club, he will meet again with the Chilean Arturo Vidal, with whom he became the 2015 Copa América champion in the trans-Andean team.

Sampaoli could debut next Wednesday when his new team faces Ñublense de Chile, at home, in the second date of Group A of the Libertadores.
