And federal judge of the state of Florida has dismissed this Friday a lawsuit for defamation of 475 million of dollars (about 430 million euros) presented by the former president of the United States, Donald Trumpagainst CNN in October 2022 accusing the network of defaming him by using the phrase ‘the great lie’ and supposedly compare it with Adolf Hitler. Trump had accused CNN of a “deterrence campaign in the form of defamation and slander”.
“CNN’s use of the phrase ‘the Big Lie’ in connection with Trump’s election challenges no place to a plausible inference that Trump advocates the persecution and genocide of Jews or any other group of people. No reasonable viewer could (or should) plausibly make that reference,” the district judge explained. Raag Singhalappointed by Trump in 2019, and this has been collected by CNN itself.
“‘Be like Hitler’ is not a statement of verifiable fact that supports a claim for defamation,” added the judge.
“Like Trump and CNN personalities, court considers references to the Nazis in political speech (made by either side) to be hateful and disgusting“, the judge recounted and added that, however, “the bad rhetoric it is not defamation when it does not include statements of fact false“. Trump campaign spokesman, Steven Cheungsaid in a statement on Saturday that they “agree with the highly respected judge’s conclusions that CNN’s statements about President Trump are repugnant.”
This lawsuit is one of many that Trump has filed against the media, including CNN‘The New York Times’ y ‘The Washington Post‘, objecting to coverage during his presidency and after losing the presidential election against the now president, Joe Bidenin 2020.
