The spiral of violence in recent weeks has resulted in around 20 shootings and explosions, two of which were fatal. Worst hit is the Stockholm area, where the police have now decided on temporary reinforcements.
According to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M), the police are in control in the sense that they know what is happening, but that what is happening is uncontrollable.
– This weekend was among the worst we have seen in a very long time, says Ulf Kristersson (M) in SVT Morgonstudion.
“Need more tools”
In 2022, there were over 60 fatal shootings in Sweden, the clearance rate was 20 percent. The police need more tools to solve crimes linked to gang crime, says Ulf Kristersson.
– I don’t doubt for a moment that the police are doing everything they can with the tools they have, says Ulf Kristersson.
The government and the Sweden Democrats have commissioned an investigation into the possibility of visitation zones and the application of anonymous witnesses as measures to curb the violence. Criticism has been directed at the proposal for, among other things, violating privacy.
– I think we have come so far in this development that we have to do things we have not done before, these are our time’s domestic terrorists, says Ulf Kristersson (M).
