A month after the destruction caused by the tornado in Laguna Heights, where one person died, several affected families are still trying to rebuild their homes. In less than 10 minutes the tornado, whose wind reached 110 mph, destroyed 65 homes in this Cameron County community.

“We went to the bathroom and threw ourselves on the floor. Then it sounded terrible, ugly, as if things were breaking around the house,” said Guillermo Mora, a Laguna Heights resident. The Mora family home did not fare as badly as its neighbors, who lost absolutely everything.

“Poor things. I ask for them to help them. It was very ugly. They came to give all the pieces of the trailer around us,” added Mora.

“In total there are 33 families that we are going to be supporting and helping. That is with a county program. These funds have a limit and they will soon run out,” explained Rolando Cazas, from the Cameron County Emergency Department.

The authorities have been supporting those who lost everything and did not qualify for state aid with accommodation. “We still have the SBA (Small Business Administration) in Port Isabel. The program ends on the 21st. We ask all those who have not applied, businesses in the Laguna Heights area that are affected, to apply. That opportunity is here. there until the 21st,” Mora stressed.

The tornado left this community very hit, but despite that they assure that they always have to be prepared. If you want more information about the help that the authorities are giving, you can call (956) 547-7000.
