“Months of media focus” as a reason for resignation

“The months-long media focus” on her person allows “objective reporting and discussion” on questions of the armed forces and security policy “hardly possible,” said Lambrecht in a written statement on Monday. “I have therefore decided to make my position available.”

“Months of media focus” as a reason for resignation? Apparently, this statement pisses some off.

“The others are always to blame” and “Where is the self-criticism”, write Twitter users: inside. For the journalist Christian Schweppe, Lambrecht’s statement about her resignation is “remarkable”. On Twitter he writes:

“It’s not her fault – it’s the media once again. Unreasonable to the end. Lambrecht has severely damaged the office and government for months.”

Another Twitter user wrote that Lambrecht’s reasoning for her resignation was “absolute cheek”. There is a lack of self-criticism. “Not a word about the massive own mistakes. Only the evil media are to blame“, he writes.

The journalist Kai Kuestner says that Lambrecht missed the opportunity “to show greatness in the exit and to admit mistakes”. Instead, she points the finger at the media, at least that’s how Kuestner interprets it.

Two resignations in the government of Chancellor Scholz

Two days before the official declaration of resignation, the CDU MP Christoph Ploß emphasized that this was the second resignation after Anne Spiegel.

After former Federal Family Minister Spiegel (Greens), Lambrecht is the second cabinet member to resign in Chancellor Scholz’s government. With her departure in April, Spiegel had drawn the consequences of a controversial vacation in France during the 2021 flood disaster during her time as State Minister for the Environment in Rhineland-Palatinate.

“Now Christine Lambrecht: The second resignation of an obviously overwhelmed traffic light minister,” writes Ploß on Twitter. According to him, when filling the highest public offices, gender, origin or skin color should not be important, but only competence. He also posts an interview with Bundestag Vice President and FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubicki. In it, the FDP politician emphasizes that the women’s quota must not play a role in the Lambrecht successor.

The CDU politician and member of the defense committee Serap Güler apparently finds Lambrecht’s decision courageous. On Twitter she writes: “Respect for this decision and the right words in the interests of our country and the soldiers.”

“Today I asked the Chancellor to be dismissed from the office of Minister of Defence,” Lambrecht said in a brief statement. “The valuable work of the servicewomen and men and the many motivated people in the business area must be in the foreground.”

Lambrecht has been in office for a good 13 months. It was not only criticized for massive equipment shortages and the hesitant course in arms deliveries to Ukraine. Her conduct of office was also criticized in the ministry. A video with New Year’s greetings from the minister, which was perceived as unfortunate, had recently increased the pressure on her again.

Also in the civey surveywhich watson commissioned, the majority of those questioned spoke out against Lambrecht.
