LG unveiled an OLED display technology that delivers 60% more brightness than previously released displays. The announcement was made during CES 2023 in early January, where the South Korean manufacturer of screens, LG Display, announced a panel based on “META” technology, which brings rearrangements in terms of software and hardware for the brand’s OLED displays. .

Although LG’s Evo displays have improved the brightness of the OLED panels produced by the company, technologies have been developed that have allowed the screens to increase nits even further. The technology called “META”, which allowed this advance, consists of two main pillars: the “META Booster” and the “Micro Lens Array” (MLA).

Brightness enhancement via software

According to LG Display, through the “META Booster” technology, which consists of a brightness enhancement algorithm, there is a “improves both the screen brightness and the color expression, analyzing and adjusting the brightness of each scene in real time. This innovative algorithm enhances HDR (High Dynamic Range), which represents brighter lights and deeper blacks, to express more detailed and vivid images with the most accurate color expression.” But the biggest improvement is in the hardware, which features a redesign for the company’s OLED displays.

Increased viewing angle and higher light output via hardware

LG Display managed to increase light output and viewing angle through technology called “Micro Lens Array” (MLA), which consists of replacing the layer responsible for directing the light emitted by organic light-emitting diodes (organic light-emitting diode or OLED) by lenses a plate composed of 42.4 billion convex microlenses (77″ 4K display), containing more than 5 thousand per pixel.

The light direction layer of a conventional OLED display ends up reflecting back the rays emitted by the organic light emitting diodes, causing a loss of light emission out of the TV. Check the image below to understand better about this issue.

LG Display says that the “Micro Lens Array” (MLA) consists of “a layer of convex lenses the size of a micrometer that maximizes the light output of the OLED panel and increases energy efficiency by 22% compared to the same brightness “. In addition, the technology improves the viewing angle, increasing to 160°, maintaining the level of brightness even with the viewer viewing the TV screen from the side.

What are OLED screens?

OLED screens have a technology where each pixel on the screen can generate its own light individually, generating deeper blacks, better contrast and a more homogeneous image. It is interesting to note that this type of display is very flexible in terms of application possibilities, allowing its use directly on glass and on smartphones with folding screens. Currently, the leading company in the development and manufacture of screens for TVs in this technology is LG.

Over the years, OLED has become cheaper and cheaper and in 2022 it is being the year of technology, with several launches of TVs with the technology. Companies like LG, Philips, Sony and Panasonic launched models at interesting prices and even in smaller sizes (42 inches) than previously seen. During CES 2023, TCL announced that it is already developing TVs with OLED technology.
